We've all been there: arriving at the venue only to realize the grips are sitting on the kitchen counter. Or the jump rope. Or worse, the lifting shoes. A well-packed bag means less stress and better performance.
Essential Gear
Some items are non-negotiable. Without them, the day can go south quickly.
- Training shoes: versatile cross training shoes (Nike Metcon, Reebok Nano, NoBull Trainer) cover about 90% of the events.
- Weightlifting shoes: a must if the program includes heavy squats or clean & jerks. Check the announced WODs before leaving them behind.
- Jump rope: always bring your own, adjusted to your height. Borrowed ropes are rarely reliable.
- Grips or hand guards: for pull-ups, toes-to-bar and muscle-ups. Torn hands mean game over.
- Weightlifting belt: useful on heavy loads. Not mandatory for everyone, but better to have it than regret it.
- Knee sleeves: compression and warmth on squats and thrusters. A comfort that makes a real difference after several events.
Nutrition and Hydration
Performance also depends on what's inside the cooler bag. We covered strategies in detail in our competition nutrition guide, but here's what to pack.
- Water bottle (1.5 L minimum): dehydration is enemy number one. Sip consistently between events.
- Isotonic drink or electrolytes: to compensate sodium loss, especially outdoors or in warm weather.
- Easy-to-digest snacks: bananas, granola bars, applesauce pouches, dried fruit. Avoid anything greasy or overly sweet.
- Prepared meal: if the competition lasts all day, pack a real meal (rice, chicken, vegetables) in a container.
Golden rule: never try a new food on competition day. Stick to what you know.
Comfort and Recovery
Between events, the body needs to recover. A few accessories make all the difference.
- Foam roller or lacrosse ball: to release tension between WODs. We also cover this in our post-competition recovery article.
- Resistance bands: perfect for muscle activation before each event and for your warm-up routine.
- Towel and change of clothes: sweating in a soaked shirt for 8 hours straight is nobody's idea of fun.
- Flip-flops or slides: let your feet breathe between events.
- Sunscreen: if the competition is outdoors. Sun exposure over a full day is often underestimated.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
These details often separate well-prepared athletes from the rest.
- Athletic tape: for thumbs on snatches, fragile wrists, or blisters that threaten to pop.
- Nail clippers: a broken nail mid-WOD happens more often than you'd think.
- Portable charger: it's a long day. Following your results on the live leaderboard drains the battery.
- ID and membership card: some competitions verify identity at check-in.
- Cash: for on-site food or sponsor merch.
Packing the bag the night before means a calm start. And a calm athlete is an athlete who performs. All that's left is to find your next competition and check every item off this list.
