How to Prepare for Your First Competition

Why enter a competition?

Taking part in a functional fitness competition is a unique experience that goes far beyond simply measuring yourself against others. It is above all a personal challenge, an opportunity to push your limits and discover what you are capable of under pressure.

Whether it's a cross training event, a Hyrox race or a CrossFit®-affiliated competition, there are categories adapted to all levels: RX, Scaled, or even Beginners depending on the event.

When are you ready?

There is no perfect moment. If you master the basic movements (squats, deadlifts, pull-ups, box jumps) and have been training regularly for at least 6 months, you can go for it.

Competition is not reserved for the elite. It is made for everyone who has the courage to show up.

Preparing your training

3 months before

  • Identify your weaknesses: gymnastics, weightlifting, cardio? Work on your weak points first.
  • Increase volume: add 1 to 2 sessions per week targeting your gaps.
  • Practice competition formats: AMRAP, For Time, EMOM... get used to these common formats in cross training and CrossFit®.

1 month before

  • Reduce volume: it's time to let the body recover.
  • Sharpen technique: quality over quantity.
  • Simulate conditions: do workouts with a timer, in front of other people.

The week before

  • Active rest: mobility, yoga, walking.
  • Optimal nutrition: hydration, complex carbs, protein.
  • Mental preparation: visualize the workouts, stay positive.

Competition day

  1. Arrive early to warm up without stress
  2. Listen to the briefing carefully — standards matter
  3. Manage your pace — don't go out too fast on the first workout
  4. Cheer for others — the community spirit is what makes these events beautiful
  5. Have fun — that's the most important thing

Equipment checklist

  • Training shoes
  • Personal jump rope
  • Knee sleeves / wrist wraps if needed
  • Chalk
  • Water and snacks (banana, energy bar)
  • Change of clothes
  • Good vibes mandatory
